The Journey…
Captain James Steuart was a Scottish mariner who first arrived in
Ceylon in 1818 aboard his ship The Leda, and found a land of
abundance and endless opportunities. It was here that he founded the
firm George Steuart & Co., in 1835.
George Steuart & Company stands proud today as the oldest mercantile
establishment in Sri Lanka. The company’s legacy is one of courage,
resilience and the will to thrive; its promise for the future is expansion
beyond its traditional boundaries and beyond Sri Lanka’s shores to
firmly establish itself globally. It is a journey that is already in motion.
The history of George Steuart & Company is closely intertwined with the
fortunes of Sri Lanka’s tea industry. In its span of nearly two centuries
George Steuart & Company has made immense contributions to
establish Sri Lanka as one of world’s foremost producers of finest quality
teas. No other company can claim the expert and intimate knowledge
that comes from being ‘The Original Ceylon Tea People’.

State of the art factory – A purpose-built, modern manufacturing complex, with 182,000 square feet of space includes large areas of blending lines and packaging lines to create, process and packet teas. The factory operates modern tea processing and packaging equipment and machinery that enable scale and speed, while ensuring the requisite global quality and standards.
The company deals in both bulk and value-added teas and has a portfolio of numerous product variations including traditional, herbal and flavoured teas to export and local markets.
A capacity of processing 18 Mn kilograms of tea annually.
